The Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) with the cooperation of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (HITE) organized a big event about Urban Sustainable Mobility that was held on May 24th, 2012 in the City Hall of Thessaloniki. In this framework the Urban Mobility System of Thessaloniki was officially presented. With the slogan You are just one click away, the citizens of Thessaloniki are urged to move quickly and smartly, while at the same time protecting the environment, by visiting the website www.mobithess.gr, free accessible by computer and / or mobile.
This is an innovative system for Greece, which consists of:
1) The Traffic Control and Management Center of the Region of Central Macedonia located in Stromnitsis str. 53. The official opening was made by the Deputy Regional Director of the Region of Central Macedonia Mr. Psomiadis, who expressed his belief that the system will significantly help the citizen of Thessaloniki, because in addition to traffic monitoring, allows for automatic and real time traffic signals adjustment in the axis of Tsimiski, depending on traffic conditions.
2) The Urban Mobility Center of Thessaloniki located in the new City Hall, the inauguration of which made the Mayor of Thessaloniki Mr. Boutaris. The Mayor was impressed by the services that the centre can provide to its users. The e-services include real time traffic information and routing suggestions (pedestrian, driver, by bus and / or combination thereof), based on four distinct criteria: time, distance, fuel consumption (very important nowadays) and environmental burdening.
The event was also attended by the Ambassador of Norway, Mr. Larsen. During the second session, issues related to planning, management and monitoring of sustainable urban mobility were presented. The participants had the opportunity to learn about best practices in Norway by Ms. Vibeke Nenseth from the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics (TOI). The President of HITE, Mr. Matthew Karlaftis presented the findings of HITE Working Group on the promotion and development of the transport system in Thessaloniki and noted that the Thessaloniki Urban Mobility System perfectly fits on the priorities identified by HITE on this issue.
The Director of HIT, Prof. G. Giannopoulos, in his speech on the contribution of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on sustainable urban mobility and development of the city, thanked all those who worked, cooperated and helped make this project reality, and the project funding mechanisms; the Greek government and the countries of the European Economic Area and especially the Norwegian government. At the same time noted that this project is another indication of what can be achieved in Greece reversing the negative image of our country in recent years.
The Thessaloniki Urban Mobility System was developed with the technical coordination of HIT/CERTH. The project coordinator was the Region of Central Macedonia, and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Thessalonikis Integrated Transport Authority (THITA), the National Observatory of Athens and the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics (TOI) also participated in the project as partners. | | Thessaloniki, Greece | |      |
